The Astrology of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, just two weeks after the death of Pope Francis. Born Robert Francisco Prevost, the 69-year-old Chicago native is the first American to lead the Catholic church.

Here’s a rundown of his astrology.

What is Pope Leo’s zodiac sign?

Pope Leo is a Virgo sun and moon. Having the same zodiac in your sun and moon can be an interesting, sometimes overwhelming journey through self discovery. The good news? It’s typically easier to get your sun and moon on the same page when they’re the same sign. And the planetary alignment can be a powerful one, especially for a person in the public eye.

Papal Astrology: Pope Leo And Virgo

Born Sept. 14, Pope Leo is a second phase Virgo on the edge of the zodiac’s third and final phase.

Like his predecessor, Pope Leo is a mutable sign. As mutables, Virgo, Sagittarius, Gemini and Pisces share similarities that sometimes show up differently based on the element.

Pope Leo’s Virgo sun and moon further connects him to Pope Francis — a third phase Sagittarius sun. Because Virgo shares Mercury with Gemini (opposite Sagittarius) the signs connect in the communication realm. For this reason, communication between Virgo and Gemini can be easy or challenging, not much in between.

With communication as its base, Virgos often find themselves in leadership positions designed to encourage change. Besides speaking, Virgos communicate visually in how they look, which includes how they dress. Because Virgo of Mercury’s influence, speaking multiple languages may come easier to Virgo than other Earth signs. But Virgos are also skilled at communicating without speaking. For this reason, Virgos thrive in creative positions that challenge them to communicate without necessarily using words.

Like other Earth signs, Virgos take titles very seriously. Titles give Earth signs direction, a starting point and a role to sink into. As a Virgo sun and moon, Pope Leo has no problem maintaining the perfect public appearance for the job. And his position as leader of the Catholic Church means his presence evokes emotion.

Virgo’s connection to Mercury (and Gemini) also plays into their love of travel. Virgos do well in jobs that require travel — either locally, nationally or globally. And especially well in jobs that allow them to be outside (fresh air does the body good).

As an Earth sign, Virgo is naturally grounded. But Mercury’s guardianship over the sign makes it harder to stay grounded without the proper foundation. Virgos usually find grounding in community: family, friends, co-workers, pets and spiritual practices — basically anything that brings people together.

When a Virgo enters a position of power, change is upon us. The purpose of a mutable sign is to build, or contribute to, an already established legacy and shift collective thinking.

Numeric Snapshot: Inside Pope Leo’s Numerology

Pope Leo being a numeric five represents change within the church but also in his own life. As a numeric five, he’s lived many lives in many positions and places. Because the number five connects to Mercury, his latest chapter brings change in areas of communication and building/creating new structures. Based on his birthday, Pope Leo has a foundational number to lean on while being ruled by the number one. This makes him a dependable leader.

Fun fact: Pope Leo XIII was a Pisces, the opposite sign of Pope Leo XIV.

And he’s not the only Pope Leo with similar astrology. Pope Leo X was a second phase Sagittarius and mutable sign in the same phase as Pope Leo XIV.
